Canadian Confederation
This semester I taught my grade 5 students about confederation. This activity promoted critical thought in my students and had them practice group work skills. I gave students a group and assigned them a colony. With their group, using a map of natural resources, proposed railway and background information on rep by pop, they had to decide whether or not they would join to become apart of Canada. This activity worked really well, and students used the information presented to come up with a logical solution. This activity goes along with the grade 5 Alberta Program of Studies Social Studies, but has also been adopted and used in Grade 7.
